Symphony No. 9 in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (April, 1993)
Author: Gustav Mahler
Average review score:

An extraordinary symphony, right before your eyes
Mahler's 9th is one of the most incredible symphonies ever written. It is an immensely complex and detailed score, one that is difficult if not impossible to appreciate without the aid of a score. It also allows the reader to see the inner workings of Mahler's compositional genius, combining motives in the most subtle of ways.

Texas Forever (Harlequin Superromance, No 989)
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (May, 2001)
Author: Ginger Chambers
Average review score:

Romance fans are going to love this one
Because she has no family or any ties, nurse Claire Hannaford can easily pick up and go on location to any assignment. Thus, she is willing to assist ninety-one-year-old matriarch Mae Parker of the famous West Texas family. However, Mae and Claire agree that neither one want her to perform as an adult sitter, but she should be there in case the senior citizen has one of her spells.

When the Parker brood find out that Mae has hired a nurse, they arrive en mass to check out the newcomer hired without their blessing. Claire quickly finds that everyone seems concerned with Mae and even feels as if she is part of this wild opinionated family, ruckus and all, for the first time in her life. Worse she feels she is in love also for the first time with her patient's nephew. However, like always once this job is done Claire will move on to the next one, but this time the memories will linger forever.

TEXAS FOREVER is a warm relationship drama that stars two formidable lead characters and an extended family for support, especially Mae, a lovable gruff grandmotherly type, who lovingly interferes in the lives of her cherished ones. The story line is fun but clearly stays within category framework, but fans still will enjoy Ginger Chamber's "West Texan" entry.

Trio Sonata (Bbc Music Guides)
Published in Hardcover by Bbc Pubns (June, 1979)
Author: Christopher Hogwood
Average review score:

Readable, knowledgeable survey of 17-18th c instrumntl music
Hogwood writes wonderfully and knows the subject in intimate detail. In this very short book, he first outlines how the melody-with-chordal-bass structure came to be established--and how changes in taste, particularly the increased popularity of the violin, contributed to the trio sonata's growth--and then covers stylistic developments country by country and composer by composer, including among other examples the consort music of Lupo, the suites and sonades of Couperin, and the sonatas of Corelli, Leclair, Bach, etc,. An excellent book, and a great shame that it's out of print!

Unauthorized America: A Travel Guide to the Places the Chamber of Commerce Won't Tell You About
Published in Paperback by HarperCollins (paper) (June, 1990)
Author: Vince Staten
Average review score:

A good guide to the offbeat
If you're planning a trip and you'd rather skip the usual theme parks, outlet malls and hole-in-the-wall museums, this book is packed with ideas ranging from a town that got "nuked" (sort of -- the bomb didn't go off) to places where Sean Penn got into fights (yes, there was more than one).

Uncertainty, Production, Choice, and Agency : The State-Contingent Approach
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (October, 2000)
Authors: Robert G. Chambers and John Quiggin
Average review score:

A pathbreaking contribution on the economics of uncertainty
This book is a must for any graduate program in Economics. The authors show how the state-contingent approach can be extended to production problems breaking the path for a unified duality theory under uncertainty. They also show that agency theory does not need to be inacessible for someone who does not care much about probability theory. Bravo!

Vermeer: Consciousness and the Chamber of Being
Published in Paperback by Umi Research Pr (August, 1984)
Author: Martin Pops
Average review score:

Brilliant analysis of Vermeer's work... the best yet!
This book looks at Vermeer's works in a beautiful and compelling light. He compares and contrasts Vermeer's life works and takes a look at women and their relationship with the world. Some are peacefully stong and centered-- compared even to Madonna's and various Annunciation scenes. Other women are caught up in the world-- off balance and looking astray. He creates wonderful visuals through his words... but also includes pictures of Vermeer's work with side sketches showing the use of space and converging lines. One of the best art analysis books I've read.

William Tell and Other Overtures in Full Score
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (August, 1994)
Author: Gioacchino Rossini
Average review score:

and the "other overtures" are...
Besides "William Tell"(1829), this volume also contains the overtures to: "La Gazza Ladra" (The Thieving Magpie, 1817); "La Scala di Seta" (The Silken Ladder, 1812); "Il Signor Bruschino" (Mr. Bruschino or The Accidental Son, 1813); "Semiramide" (1823). From Dover's Bibliographical Note: "This Dover edition, first published in 1994, is a new compilation of five previously uncollected works originally published by Breitkopf & Haertel, n.d. Lists of contents and instruments have been added in the Dover edition, accompanied by information about the source of each work, its librettist(s) and first performance. For the Overture to Il Signor Bruschino, a new editorial note clarifies performance of the col legno passages; for the Overture to Semiramide, a brief note about playing cues replaces a longer explanation in the original score, printed in three languages."
